Program Description

Diabetes is a chronic illness that requires consistent and attentive management on behalf of the patient to improve quality of life and clinical outcomes. Modern education programs for diabetics are encouraged to reach beyond traditional models of education by emphasizing problem-solving skills, collaborative goal-setting, and accurate decision making.

TeleDiabetit is a patient-focused web intervention designed to improve glycemic control and quality of life for Type I and II diabetics living in Albania. The web application incorporates three primary functions designed to improve patient self-management of diabetes: (i) a private patient-physician blogging forum dedicated to patient questions and progress evaluation (ii) a blood glucose tracker that depicts, graphically, a patient's glycemic control over time and (iii) a health goal organizer that allows physicians and patients to delineate specific clinical and behavioral goals. A prospective clinical trial is currently underway to determine the effect of enrollment on clinical end-points (HbA1c, body weight), user utilization of the application, as well as participant satisfaction. This project is funded by a grant from the International Virtual e-Hospital and partnered with the Albanian Association of Diabetics.

Program Description

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is associated with learning impairment and social dysfunction. Treatment of autism requires frequent and intensive attention from professional therapists. Due to financial or time restraints, families with autistic children living in rural settings are often at a disadvantage for achieving effective care.

TeleAutizmi is an online web portal designed to improve long-term social outcomes for autistic Albanian children by providing remote education and coaching to their parents. Specifically, the platform enables parents to (i) conduct live, home-based videochat sessions with speech language pathologists who can coach and guide families during therapeutic sessions and (ii) engage with online educational modules that offer effective teaching strategies as well as physical and verbal interactions. This project is sponsored by the International Virtual e-Hospital and currently undergoing development.
